Kick-Off meeting of the Comenius project “How to talk about intercultural education: intercultual competences in preschool pedagogy”

From the 27h to the 29th November the Kick-Off meeting of the Comenius exchange project took place in Leipzig. The aim of the project is the exchange of methods and good practices regarding the integration of children with a migration background as well as strenghtening the intercultural skills of the participants. Five kindergartens from four European countries take part in the project: Campi Soncini from Reggio Emilia (Italy), Armbandet och Kättsätters förskola from Norrköping (Sweden), the 2nd and 13th kindergartens of Crete (Greece) and our kindergarten in Kohlgartenstraße.

The meeting began on Tuesday with a welcoming session and a presentation by Mr Falko on the definition of culture and what it means to apply it in everyday life with children from different cultures. After the lunch break our colleagues Antje, Carmen and Merle showed us the building and explained us the pedagogical concepts of the school.

Wednesday was “offers day”: every Wednesday the children can choose among different activities and this time our colleagues from abroad also took part in them with the children. It was interesting to see how the educators from Kohlgartenstrasse engaged wih interculturality and how they included it in the activities. Carmen for example chose to read a book in many different languages, Antje to count the numbers in Vietnamese and Arabic.

On Thursday we reflected on the meeting through feedbacks, brainstorming and discussions over the next steps to take. We also established the timetable for the next meetings and exchanged some souvenirs. To conclude the event we assisted to a presentation of the HIPPY Project of FAIRbund: the colleagues of the other countries did not know this programme and were very enthusiastic about it.

We all worked a lot, but there was also some time to relax and discover the city: on Tuesady we all met for a glass of mulled wine at the Christmas Market and on Wednesday we went to Pan restaurant to eat together.

We look forward to our next meeting in Italy!
