What is the European Voluntary Service? (EVS)
With the European Voluntary Service, youth from all Europe is recruited abroad as volunteers on social projects to help the comunity where they will live and work. The proposal is directed to all young people between 18 and 30 years old, and 16 year can also be accepted in exceptional circumstances. Before, during and after the EVS, volunteers are educationally assisted. EVS is not a commercial proposal and consequently the participation for volunteers is free. There are no other limits on a participant’s application: a specific educational qualification is not required.
EVS usually takes place in EU-countries, but there are also some extra-EU partnerships with the Ukraine, Georgia, Moldovia, Turkey and Israel that allow exchanges to take place in these countries.
In Germany, a lot of effort was made to increase the involvement of young people in the EVS who had fewer opportunities. In particular, volunteers with migrant background and / or only their principal or secondary school certificate can receive increased funding priority.
Usually, EVS lasts between 2 and 12 months. Young people with special needs can also apply for shorter projects of 2 weeks and they will receive the appropriate assistance.
